Christian’s work on trade focusses on the Global South and on Africa in particular. He is a Senior Research and Policy Officer at the Economic Policy Network at the Blavatnik School of Government at the University of Oxford. Before, he worked for the International Growth Centre as a Senior Country Economist in Rwanda. In both roles, Christian has been advising governments on their growth agenda including the critical role of designing policies to foster domestic and international trade. Christian work on trade, published in academic journals and policy reports for international organisations including the World Bank and the WTO. His work spans around technical aspects of the international trade ecosystem (such as the design of Rules-of-Origin), the role of the government to shape a trade-enabling environment in national contexts, and the future of African trade opportunities in a changing global environment with (digital) services trade growing in importance. Christian is currently working on several RCT-based research project that examine the efficacy and optimal design of targeted industrial policy and their role in strengthening domestic trade integration and access to international markets (including programs to alleviate credit constraints and support quality certification).
